Patient Recruitment for a clinical study in neurology (neuropathic pain)

Neuropathic pain is a chronic pain condition. Typically, pain is due to an injury or illness. With neuropathic pain, no event or injury causes the pain. Instead, the body just sends pain signals to the brain unprompted.

There is a large unmet need in the treatment of neuropathic pain, affecting up to 8% of the population.

Situation

A clinical study running in France was falling behind in recruitment. Pivotal Patient Journey was contacted to boost the recruitment.

Challenges:

  • Get approval from French ethics commitee as soon as possible
  • Build trust with French study sites.
  • Small time window: select and refer 80 prequalified candidates in less than 4 months

Results:

  • Pivotal's project team designed a digital campaign, built a study webpage with online pre-screener, and got approval from Ethics Committee in less than 1 month.
  • In only 3.5 months time, Pivotal recruited and pre-qualified 80 study candidates.

Our approach

Multichannel patient recruitment strategy involving a stepwise prequalification process:

  1. Creating awareness: Facebook and Google advertisement, collaboration with patient associations
  2. Informing candidates: dedicated landing webpage on C-Lys patient platform with study information
  3. Pre-qualification of candidates - step 1: online registration form
  4. Pre-qualification of candidates - step 2: telephone prequalification contact with registered candidates
  5. Referral to study site:  informed, motivated and pre-qualified candidates referred to stuy site
